Former Bellator MMA featherweight tournament winner Shahbulat Shamhalaev is in stable condition after being shot in his home country of Dagestan on Tuesday, according to Bloody Elbow's Karim Zidan.

Earlier, Zidan reported that Shamhalaev had been put in emergency care after being shot five times, with one bullet striking his head. He also noted that the incident may have occurred when Shamhalaev went to "make peace" for an altercation that happened the day prior.

The 32-year-old fighter is most well known for his run with Bellator from 2012-2014 in which he compiled a 3-2 record.

Shamhalaev delivered three straight knockout victories to win the Season 7 featherweight tournament and earned a title bout against Pat Curran, which he lost by submission.
