GSP: I could 'easily' fight at lightweight in UFC return
With Georges St-Pierre's long-awaited return to the Octagon coming closer to being a reality, it appears the former welterweight champion and Michael Bisping are on a middleweight collision course.
The fight would involve St-Pierre jumping up a weight class to challenge Bisping. However, the 35-year-old isn't concerned about moving away from 170 pounds - the only weight class he's ever known in the UFC - and even hinted that middleweight isn't his only option in his return.
"If I wanted to, I could fight at lightweight as well. Easy. Easy," St-Pierre said last Monday on The MMA Hour, according to Shaun Al-Shatti of MMAFighting.com.
Now unshackled from the responsibilities of holding the welterweight belt, St-Pierre said he will examine his options "more experimentally."
The 5-foot-10 Canadian understands the challenges he'll be facing moving to middleweight and facing the 6-foot-2 Bisping, but like he has throughout his career, he aims to counter size with unmatched skill.
"I'm not a big welterweight," St-Pierre said. "I walk around 187 (pounds). I'm 186, 187 when I wake up in the morning, and I could easily make it (with) a diet, because a lot of lightweights are bigger than me. Welterweight, I don't even talk about it because most of them are bigger than me, of course, and middleweight, they're much bigger than me. But it's not really about size. It's about skills."
