Cerrone welcomes Alvarez rematch: 'I'll beat his ass again and take the belt'
Donald Cerrone's career is packed with achievements, including being the only man to defeat current lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez in the UFC.
The two fought in September 2014 at UFC 178, Alvarez's highly anticipated Octagon debut after an illustrious four-year run with Bellator MMA. Cerrone took a unanimous decision to continue what would become an eight-fight winning streak.
That streak earned Cerrone his first UFC title shot against then-champion Rafael dos Anjos. He failed to win the gold, but is considering taking another shot now that Alvarez sits atop the 155-pound division.
"Hell yeah, I'd love it," Cerrone said told Damon Martin of FOX Sports. "I'll beat his ass again and take the belt."
Currently, Cerrone owns the unique distinction of being ranked in two different weight classes. He is No. 6 in the lightweight division and No. 14 in the welterweight division, the latter standing a result of his 2-0 record at 170 pounds.
"Cowboy" fights No. 9-ranked welterweight Rick Story on Saturday at UFC 202 in Las Vegas, but even if he wins and moves into the top 10 of that division, it's the Alvarez fight that intrigues him the most, especially if it happens at UFC 205, the promotion's New York debut.
"Eddie Alvarez is a fight I'm definitely (interested in)," Cerrone said. "After I beat Rick Story, I'm going to call him out and try to get that Eddie/Cowboy 2 in New York. Hell yeah, Madison Square Garden, how cool would that be to fight in?"
