Alvarez's coach instigates trash talk with Team McGregor on Instagram
Eddie Alvarez's coach is already picking a fight with his next potential opponent.
Mark Henry runs a stable including Alvarez, Edson Barboza, and former UFC champion Frankie Edgar in New Jersey. On Tuesday afternoon, Henry took to Instagram in response to Conor McGregor's coach, John Kavanagh, predicting his prized pupil would handily beat Alvarez by knockout in a lightweight fight:
The submission loss Henry refers to in the caption, is likely McGregor's first bout with Nate Diaz at UFC 196, where he tapped to a rear-naked choke. All three of the Irishman's career losses have come by submission.
Henry further betrayed his opinion of McGregor as a one-dimensional fighter by suggesting Kavanagh give the profits of his book, entitled "Win or Learn," to McGregor's striking coach Owen Roddy, and punctuated the stance with the hashtag #NeverFightsWrestlers. The Irishman has ended 17 of his 20 career victories by knockout.
Alvarez himself had publicly stated his desire to defend his lightweight belt against the victor of McGregor's rematch with Diaz at UFC 202. McGregor won by majority decision, and has repeatedly voiced his reluctance to defend the featherweight championship against interim king Jose Aldo, who he knocked out in 13 seconds at UFC 194.
McGregor vacating the 145-pound strap would bring him much closer to a clash for Alvarez's. If the bout does get booked, Henry will be chomping at the bit to reciprocate his unique brand of trash talk.
