Miller wins 17th UFC fight by out-grappling Alves
Jim Miller showed once again that he is one of the sport's most versatile fighters.
The veteran lightweight notched the 17th win of his UFC career with a workmanlike effort against the dangerous Thiago Alves. Miller repeatedly used takedowns to snuff out Alves' striking en route to a unanimous decision win in the featured Fight Pass prelim of UFC 205 on Saturday in New York City.
Miller would have become the owner of the all-time record for most UFC wins at 155 pounds, but the bout was contested at a catchweight of 163 pounds after Alves failed to make weight on Friday. It is the second straight win for Miller after taking a split decision over Joe Lauzon in August.
All three rounds between Miller and Alves told the same story. Alves attempted to assert himself with strong kickboxing only to be taken down by Miller's perfectly timed double-leg shots. Whenever Alves made it back to his feet, it wasn't long before he was put back on the mat and neutralized by the gritty Miller.
Alves loses in what would have been his lightweight debut. He falls to 13-8 overall in the UFC and his future at 155 pounds is in question after his weigh-in miss.
