The retired fighter recently appeared on "The Adam Carolla Show" where he praised Nurmagomedov after seeing the 28-year-old Russian dominate Michael Johnson at UFC 205. Henderson was an elite wrestler before transitioning to MMA and he predicts that the grappling of Nurmagomedov could give him the edge over dual-division titleholder Conor McGregor.
"I think that kid that fought last weekend, (Nurmagomedov), the Russian kid, that's at 155 - I think he would definitely give Conor a huge problem," Henderson said, according to MMA Fighting. "I think he definitely would take him down and beat the piss out of him."
McGregor won the lightweight title in the main event of UFC 205 when he punched out Eddie Alvarez, a fighter with a strong wrestling background who chose to stand and bang with "The Notorious." While Henderson respects the improvements that McGregor has made in his all-around game, he hopes that the next grappler he faces learns from Alvarez's mistake and sticks to their strengths.
"(McGregor's) always shown that he's got good hands, good kicks, but to see him against a couple different wrestlers that had good hands, it took me awhile to get on board with him," Henderson said. "I think Eddie just did not fight a smart fight whatsoever. He didn't use his wrestling whatsoever."
