'Wonderboy': McGregor is 'too small' for welterweight

If Conor McGregor is thinking of claiming a third world title, he may want to think twice about it.

No. 1 welterweight contender Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson recently said the dual-division champion simply isn't suited for a run at 170 pounds, in conversation with "Submission Radio." Thompson is fresh off of a majority draw against welterweight champion Tyron Woodley at UFC 205, and he believes it makes a lot more sense for them to fight again than for McGregor to take his spot.

"I think the UFC knows that I deserve that title shot and I deserve that rematch," Thompson said, according to Paul Dollery of The42. "I think that Conor McGregor's got to defend the 145 (pounds) and the 155 title, and I just think he's too small for the 170 division. He's walking around right at 170, maybe a little bit less. I don't think it would be a good division for him to step up to."

McGregor has already competed at welterweight in the UFC, bulking up for a pair of blockbuster fights against Nate Diaz earlier this year. After he defeated Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 to claim titles at both lightweight and featherweight, the possibility of fighting for the 170-pound belt suddenly didn't seem far-fetched.

Thompson doesn't recommend the move, but he'd be happy to test McGregor's mettle should their paths cross.

"I think it would be a good fight, no matter what," Thompson said. "He's one of the best fighters out there and that's what we're out to do. We're out to fight the best fighters in whatever division, whoever steps up ...

"If you're a champion or not, you should take on all challenges and I think it would be a good fight. I think the fans would tune in to see who would win."
