Cyborg: USADA violation from medical treatment, 'nothing bad'

Cris Cyborg is denying that her USADA violation has anything to do with performance-enhancing substances.

Without being able to provide details due to the ongoing investigation, Cyborg is attributing her failed test to substances that are part of treatment she's taking in regards to health issues caused by her recent weight cuts.

"What I can say now is that they are talking to my doctor, and I'm calm,” Cyborg told Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting. "Everybody knows I'm sick, that I'm recovering from the weight cut I had to do for the fight. What is happening is post-weight cut ...

"It's nothing bad. I'm on medical treatment."

Prior to Cyborg's comments, her boyfriend Ray Elbe took to The Underground forum to give his own account of what may have caused the violation.

"(The failed test was) not for a steroid, and she has a prescription as part of the post-fight therapy she's been receiving due to the severe weight cut," Elbe wrote. "This has been known for a few days, and Cris' doctor has been in direct contact with USADA turning over all the necessary patient files to document the reasons Cris needs the medication."

In a subsequent comment, Elbe pointed to a drug known as "spironolactone," a diuretic that may have been used to help Cyborg cut down to 140 pounds for her second UFC fight.

"Cris had issues with her kidneys and blood pressure and (spironolactone is) part of a prescription she's been seeking for therapy," Elbe wrote.

Cyborg is 2-0 since joining the UFC in May, and hasn't lost an MMA bout since her first fight 11 years ago. She was previously busted in January 2011 for stanozolol, an anabolic steroid. That infraction earned her a one-year suspension from competition.
