Watch: Garbrandt puts title on child cancer survivor
Cody Garbrandt may be the UFC's new bantamweight champion, but he'll be the first to say otherwise.
After dethroning Dominick Cruz by unanimous decision in the co-main event of Friday's UFC 207, Garbrandt made good on a vow he'd made to 10-year-old Maddux Maple. The youngster was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 5, and "No Love" promised he'd get to watch his first title fight from the best seat in the house if he vanquished the illness.
The newly crowned champ credited a now cancer-free Maple with steering his life in a new direction, and expressed his gratitude by strapping the title around the boy's waist moments after he'd been anointed champion.
According to Garbrandt's manager, the fighter will bring Maple's triumph full circle by sending him back to their native Ohio with the belt in tow.
