Rousey's mom: 'I would like to see her retire'
AnnMaria De Mars has never been hesitant to talk about what's best for her daughter.
The mother of UFC women's bantamweight star Ronda Rousey, De Mars (a world champion judoka) has guided Rousey's martial arts career from a young age, watching her make the transition from Olympic athlete to MMA world champion. De Mars was at ringside to witness Rousey's brutal TKO loss to Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 and if it were up to her, that would be Rousey's last appearance in the Octagon.
"I would like to see her retire," De Mars told TMZ Sports. "I would have liked to have seen her retire a long time ago. Who wants to see their kid get hit?"
It was the second straight loss for Rousey, who was returning from a 13-month layoff. She was knocked out by Holly Holm last November, which cost her the UFC women's bantamweight title and sent her into seclusion.
Rousey reemerged in January to host Saturday Night Live, one of several dalliances that she's had with acting and entertainment. Given that Rousey's fame extends beyond the fighting realm, De Mars would like to see her pursue those opportunities further.
"She's got a lot of talent in a lot of other things," said De Mars. "Movies, writing, producing, she's really, really smart. I told her that at the very beginning when she started this. Let the stupid people get punched in the face."
