MMA community reacts to Meryl Streep's comments
When one of the world's most famous actresses criticizes a sport that countless athletes have dedicated their lives to, there's going to be a reaction.
During Sunday's Golden Globes, Meryl Streep was accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and she used her speech to address some issues she had with President-elect Donald Trump and the political climate in the United States.
At one point, she put the "art" aspect of mixed martial arts into question when referring to how an exodus of foreigners would leave Americans with only football and MMA to watch.
The fighting community did not take this lying down:
Really weird to see someone talk about not discriminating then basically discriminate against an entire group of skilled, hard working ppl.

Meryl Streep how ignorant are u. In your speech you stated "Disrespect invites disrespect" yet you ignorantly disrespected an entire sport.

Sounds like Meryl Streep is still upset about not getting cast in "Never Back Down 3 (No Surrender)." Can't get ALL the good roles Meryl!

With all due respect to #MerylStreep... MMA may not be the "arts" but then again, neither was "Ricki and the Flash." #GoldenGlobes pic.twitter.com/jEENO3CC0M

So you're telling me a 67 year old actress considers her profession more artistic than a combat sport? pic.twitter.com/wM8F10QmEb

I was surprised #MerylStreep had the nerve and jealousy to say acting is an art, not MMA.

And then.... I remembered she's an old hag. pic.twitter.com/qh2wET16e6
You lost me at mixed martial arts, Meryl. Not cool.

I agree w/ her but MMA was also brought to US by foreigners.@roriongracie who start everything is an immigrant too. https://t.co/89JcUtIpju

Even Conor McGregor had something to say about Streep's comments ... sort of:
