White: I'm going to get Johnson his remaining championship belts
Demetrious Johnson will finally get to channel his inner-Floyd Mayweather.
After the reigning UFC flyweight champ told the media he couldn't pose with the fruits of his life's work because he hadn't received a championship belt for every one of his title defenses, president Dana White said he'd fit Johnson with the missing hardware moments following his record-tying 10th win as champion at UFC on FOX 24 this past Saturday.
"I’m going to get him his belts," White told the UFC's Megan Olivi, according to Dave Doyle of MMA Fighting. "He’s definitely getting his belt from tonight, and then I guess I’ve got some catching up to do."
White was quick to point out that contrary to popular belief, the promotion's champions aren't awarded a new belt every time they retain their titles, although it appears he'll make an exception for Johnson, widely touted as the world's preeminent fighter and still the only flyweight champ the UFC has ever known.
"That’s not the way it works. You don’t get a new belt every time. You defend your belt, you keep your belt. If we were handing out belts with every single defense, that would be a lot of money. And to be honest with you, we don’t even have eight more belts. They bring ‘em, we order them as we do events. There’s going to be a backup on his belts, but he’s going to get them."
The 30-year-old Johnson previously claimed he only had one actual belt to his name, but it now looks like he'll need to invest in a much bigger trophy case.
