Frank Mir receives 2-year USADA suspension for banned substances

On Friday, the USADA handed former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir a two-year suspension from competition after he failed multiple tests for an anabolic agent.

Mir is currently serving a provisional suspension dating back to April 2016 when the infraction was first reported. The 37-year-old fighter will be eligible to compete again two years from that date.

Specifically, Mir tested positive for a long-term metabolite of dehydrochloromethyltestosterone (DHCMT), a non-specified substance classified as an anabolic agent that is banned year-round by the USADA. Mir's sample was originally tested in a World Anti-Doping Agency-accredited lab in Tokyo, and additional analysis was administered in Salt Lake City.

That additional information, which included a February 2016 sample that also contained a DHCMT metabolite, resulted in the USADA making a final decision on Mir's sanction.

Mir last fought in March 2016, a first-round KO loss to Mark Hunt. The UFC's longest-tenured heavyweight has just two wins in his last eight fights and he has previously asked the promotion for his release so that he can pursue other opportunities.
