White: McGregor-Mayweather date lost to Golovkin-Alvarez
Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather will have to find another date for their superfight after Saturday's announcement of a Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin bout for Sept. 16 in Las Vegas.
The fight was announced following Alvarez's dominating win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and UFC president Dana White revealed after that they had been targeting the same date for McGregor-Mayweather.
"We just lost our date to Canelo and Triple-G, but good, that's a good fight. I'll be at that one, too," UFC president Dana White said when speaking to Fight Hub after the Alvarez versus Chavez Jr. match, according to Damon Martin of FOX Sports.
McGregor and White are expected to meet soon to work out the parameters of the deal before finalizing the details with Mayweather's reps, added Martin, though it will now be made more complicated by the need for a new date.
Despite losing the date, White said he's excited to see Alvarez and Golovkin go at it.
"Canelo looked good tonight, Canelo looked awesome. Triple-G's fun man, he's the type of guy boxing needs, so it will be a fun fight," White said. "So is Canelo, Canelo went at it tonight.
"The fans win that fight. That's gonna be a real fight. That's gonna be a fun one."
