Officials confirm Anderson Silva out of UFC 212

Following Anderson Silva's announcement that he would no longer be competing at UFC 212, the promotion confirmed the withdrawal Thursday.

The 42-year-old middleweight was originally scheduled to fight Kelvin Gastelum in Rio de Janeiro, but Gastelum was removed after failing a drug test for marijuana. Failure to find a replacement and frustrations with the UFC led to Silva saying he wouldn't be competing at the June 3 event.

It's unclear what's next for Silva, who won his first UFC fight in over four years in a close unanimous decision over Derek Brunson in February. According to his manager Jorge Guimaraes, Silva is flying to Los Angeles and he will not be attending UFC 212.

"He's just going to go back home and hang out with his family, look at other options," Guimaraes told ESPN's Brett Okamoto. "I know he's got some offers for movies and stuff.

"He's very well off. Retirement is an option. I don't think that's the case and, personally, I don't think he should retire. I saw him training and he's doing it intelligently. His eating habits are great. He's in top shape. But if he chooses to retire, he's well off and could do it."

Silva has become increasingly disgruntled with the UFC over the past few months. He recently threatened to retire if matchmakers didn't put together an interim title fight between himself and Yoel Romero, a request that was shot down by UFC president Dana White.

Silva and Gastelum were set to be the co-main event of UFC 212, but that spot now appears to belong to strawweight contenders Claudia Gadelha and Karolina Kowalkiewicz.
