UFC 214 title participants weigh in 30 days before event

The California State Athletic Commission is serious about stopping extreme weight cutting.

In a historic move, the CSAC asked UFC 214 title fight participants Daniel Cormier, Jon Jones, Tyron Woodley, Demian Maia, Cris Cyborg, and Tonya Evinger to weigh in via Facetime 30 days in advance of the July 29 card in Anaheim, according to Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting, who spoke to CSAC executive officer Andy Foster.

"We are so pleased with the cooperation from the camps and the fighters," Foster said of the weigh-ins, which occurred earlier this week. "This was not some kind of small undertaking and everyone was very helpful in getting it done."

The advance weigh-ins are part of a long term plan by the commission to curb the kind of cutting habits that can affect the health and performance of the UFC's athletes. Foster did not give exact numbers, but it appears that the six headliners are within the parameters that the commission is targeting.

Cormier defends the light heavyweight title against Jones in the UFC 214 main event, while Woodley looks for his third defense of the welterweight title, and Cyborg and Evinger compete for the vacant women's featherweight championship.
