Cejudo suffers burns, loses gold medal as wildfire ravages California

Tim Heitman / USA TODAY Sports

Henry Cejudo managed to escape the wildfire that's torn through his native California, but he wasn't unscathed.

Contrary to reports that he'd suffered a broken ankle, the UFC flyweight contender in fact sustained several burns on his right foot while fleeing the fire in Santa Rosa earlier this week, according to MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani.

Cejudo also lost the gold medal he won in freestyle wrestling at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the fire.

The burns shouldn't keep him from making his December date with Sergio Pettis at UFC 218, says Helwani.

Wildfire has plagued northern California since late last week, with thousands misplaced and hundreds reported missing. As of Tuesday, seven deaths have been reported in the Santa Rosa area.
