CSAC recommends Moraes, 3 others move up in weight after UFC Fresno
The California State Athletic Commission drafted a plan to combat extreme weight cutting, and they're sticking to it.
Bantamweights Marlon Moraes, Luke Sanders, and Iuri Alcantara, as well as lightweight Davi Ramos have been met with recommendations from the commission to move to a heavier division after regaining more than 10 percent of the contracted weight for their bouts at UFC Fight Night 123 in Fresno earlier this month, per documentation obtained by MMA Fighting's Marc Raimondi on Friday.
The CSAC will not license the fighters to compete in their usual divisions unless commission doctors verify "extensive medical documentation from a licensed physician" which assesses they can safely compete in the weight class.
Moraes, Sanders, and Alcantara made the 136-pound bantamweight limit at the event's weigh-ins but all regained between 14 and 14.5 percent of the poundage by fight night - putting each of them in the vicinity of 155 pounds, Raimondi reports.
Ramos - who competed at welterweight in his short-notice promotional debut in March - went from 155.8 pounds to 179 in a 15-percent increase.
Moraes and Ramos ultimately picked up stoppage victories over Aljamain Sterling and Chris Gruetzemacher, respectively, while Sanders suffered a second-round knockout at Andre Soukhamthath's hands, and Alcantara dropped a tepid split decision to Alejandro Perez.
Days prior to the card, the CSAC and UFC had agreed to shift Carls John de Tomas' dance with Alex Perez from flyweight to bantamweight when both fighters entered fight week more than 10 percent above the 126-pound limit. Perez went on to submit his foe in the second round.
The commission issued similar recommendations to UFC lightweight Drew Dober and Invicta FC bantamweight champion Yana Kunitskaya earlier this year.
