A title fight between middleweight champion Robert Whittaker and Yoel Romero is being targeted for UFC 225 on June 9 in Chicago, sources told Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting.

The bout would be a rematch of the UFC 213 main event, where Whittaker (19-4) won the interim title, which was later promoted to undisputed status. Whittaker was scheduled to defend his title against Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 in February, but was replaced by Romero after incurring several injuries.

Romero (13-2) missed weight and became ineligible to win the interim title against Rockhold, but earned number one contender's status with a third-round knockout.

This will be the first time Whittaker, the UFC's first Australian champion, has met the same fighter in consecutive bouts through his 23-fight career. The 27-year-old is on an eight-fight winning streak and remains undefeated as a UFC middleweight since moving up from 170 pounds in November 2014.

It has already been announced that the Chicago card will include a heavyweight match between Alistair Overeem and Curtis Blaydes as well as a strawweight fight between Claudia Gadelha and Carla Esparza.
