Nelson vs. Magny booked for UFC Liverpool
Gunnar Nelson's campaign for a spot on UFC Fight Night 130 has bore fruit.
A welterweight tilt between the Icelandic submission artist and Neil Magny is set for what will mark the promotion's first visit to Liverpool's Echo Arena on May 27, which the UFC added to the bill Tuesday.
Nelson will look to rebound from a career-first knockout he suffered at Santiago Ponzinibbio's hands at UFC Fight Night 113 in July with his fourth straight booking on the other side of the Atlantic. The 29-year-old appealed the result soon thereafter, arguing Ponzinibbio had poked him in the eyes several times before putting him away in just 82 seconds, but the stoppage was ultimately upheld - thereby halting a two-fight win streak. Nelson now brings a 7-3 UFC record to Liverpool, with all but one promotional victory coming via tapout.
Magny, 30, has swapped wins and losses over his past four fights, and most recently spoiled Carlos Condit's return from a lengthy layoff with a unanimous verdict at UFC 219 in December. He meets Nelson with a 13-5 Octagon record.
Also booked for the bill was another 170-pound clash between Englishman Brad Scott and Salim Touahri. Scott was slated to face Jack Marshman on short notice in London earlier this month, only for the Welshman to be yanked during fight week over safety concerns regarding his first attempt at cutting to 171 pounds.
Scouser Darren Till is expected to headline the event against a yet-to-be-confirmed welterweight foe, although Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson was reportedly attached to the matchup last weekend.
