Pennington agrees with coach's call to remain in Nunes fight
Many believed Raquel Pennington's coaches made the wrong decision by sending her out for the fifth round of a main event fight against Amanda Nunes on Saturday after she said "I'm done."
Pennington, however, was not among those people.
"I'm proud of my coaches ... You never know what's happening in that moment," Pennington said on "The MMA Hour" on Monday. "I agreed with my coaches as soon as the fight was done. I agreed with them in that moment."
Pennington, who lost via TKO in the final round, said she could have waived it off or tapped out, but made the call to not give up on the fight.
"I'm glad that my coaches didn't let me give up on myself," said Pennington. "In that moment I was quitting on myself and that's when a coach steps in, they push their athlete."
Pennington said she became frustrated by a leg injury, which caused her to suggest stopping the fight. The 29-year-old believes she broke her leg in the first round of the fight and received "terrible" medical treatment in Brazil. She broke the same leg in a 2017 ATV accident that kept her out of competition, and says her coaches were aware of the injury during the fight.
She added that her bloodied nose was not as bad as it looked.
Pennington, who fought for the first time since November 2016 on Saturday, says she's very comfortable with her coaches and doesn't plan to separate from them. Pennington's fiancee, UFC strawweight Tecia Torres, said via Instagram on Sunday that the two agreed with the decision.
"Stop judging from the outside because you'll never understand what's going on unless you're in our shoes and in our position," said Pennington, addressing fans and media who have criticized her corner team since Saturday night.
Pennington's head coach Jason Kutz joined "The MMA Hour" later in the show after his fighter to confirm that he's not regretting the decision, citing that he could tell she wasn't really "done" by the look in her eyes.
