Maia expects to retire after next 4 fights
At 40 years old, Demian Maia can see the end of the road approaching for his MMA career.
Coming off back-to-back losses, Maia will face Kamaru Usman this Saturday in the main event of UFC Chile in what he expects to be his fourth-last fight. Maia's contract has four fights left and he doesn't see himself taking more bouts after that deal is up.
"I'm thinking that I want to fight this year, maybe next year finish these fights on my contract because I love to fight and I'm still performing well during training camps, but I don't know if I'll still be fighting after next year," Maia said on The MMA Hour on Monday. "So this could be my last contract and then after that, I'm retired."
Maia (25-8) has fought twice for a UFC title, losing both attempts, and has been a pro MMA fighter since 2001, debuting with the UFC in 2007. He is currently the fifth-ranked welterweight contender coming off back-to-back losses and while he's not sick of the sport, he wants to walk away on his own terms before it forces him out.
"Not because I don't like or enjoy it," said Maia. "Almost 11 years in this game, with the UFC, and it's a lot of commitment, a lot of pressure, and also I want to have different projects that I like to do."
Maia says he wants to be able to spend more time with his family and try new ventures before he's too old.
