Woodley-Till welterweight title fight booked for UFC 228
UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley will take on No. 2-ranked welterweight Darren Till in a title fight at UFC 228 on Sept. 8.
The UFC had been looking for a headline bout for its Sept. 8 card in Dallas, Texas.
Woodley hasn't fought since July 2017 due to a shoulder injury, but he always targeted this summer for his return.
In his absence, Colby Covington won the interim welterweight belt in June, but he reportedly bowed out of a unification bout with Woodley. ESPN's Ariel Helwani reports Covington underwent successful surgery to connect a nasal issue on Tuesday and is expected to return in November.
Covington will be stripped of the interim title the moment Woodley-Till gets underway, according to Helwani.
Till enters the title fight with an unblemished record. He's 17-0-1 for his career and 5-0-1 in the UFC. He KO'd Donald Cerrone in October and earned a unanimous decision victory over Stephen Thompson in May.
