Shevchenko puts in dominant performance to win vacant flyweight title
Valentina Shevchenko dominated Joanna Jedrzejczyk in a unanimous decision win to earn the vacant UFC women's flyweight title in the co-main event of UFC 231 on Saturday.
It was Shevchenko's fourth win in four fights against Jedrzejczyk.
Shevchenko showed why many already considered her the elite of the 125-pound division, controlling the bout from start to finish with her strength and grappling advantage to win by scores of 49-46, 49-46, and 49-46.
Shevchenko scored five takedowns and stymied the offense of Jedrzejczyk, who had no answers in her flyweight debut.
After the fight, the newly crowned champion heaped praise on her opponent.
"This is more valid for me to get this belt from this type of fight than with another opponent," Shevchenko said.
