Report: McGregor charged with assault for April bar incident
Conor McGregor was charged with assault Friday for an incident in a Dublin bar in April, reports Robin Schiller of The Independent.
The 31-year-old is expected to appear before a Dublin court on Oct. 11. If convicted, the charge carries a maximum prison term of six months, a fine of $1,646, or both.
McGregor (21-4) last competed in the UFC in October 2018 when he was submitted by Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of UFC 229.
The former two-division UFC champion dealt with multiple legal problems in March, as he was arrested for allegedly smashing a man's cell phone and was reportedly under investigation after a woman said the fighter sexually assaulted her in December.
McGregor apologized in August for the pub incident.
"That man deserved to enjoy his time in the pub without having it end the way it did," he told Ariel Helwani of ESPN. "I tried to make amends, and I made amends back then. But it doesn't matter. I was in the wrong. I must come here before you and take accountability and take responsibility. I owe it to the people that have been supporting me. I owe it to my mother, my father, my family. I owe it to the people who trained me in martial arts. That's not who I am. That's not the reason why I got into martial arts or studying combat sports. The reason I got into it was to defend against that type of scenario."
McGregor's team had no further comment on Friday's charge when asked by Helwani.
