Calvillo: 'Paige VanZant sucks at fighting'
Cynthia Calvillo didn't appreciate Paige VanZant's response - or lack thereof - after VanZant called out many of the UFC's flyweight and strawweight women in an Instagram post almost a month ago.
VanZant tagged a long list of other fighters (the fourth being Calvillo), wrote that "it would be an honor to share the cage with any of you ladies at 115 or 125," and asked anyone who was interested to let the UFC know.
Calvillo told theScore that she commented on VanZant's post and accepted a potential matchup, but the former "Dancing With The Stars" contestant deleted the strawweight's response.
"At first, I (didn't want to say anything) about her, because we were teammates before," Calvillo said. "But I was one of the (people) she tagged and one of the people that she would not reply to."
Calvillo added, "I think calling someone out is fine. ... The fights that she wanted, she would keep or she would reply to them. (But) ... she kept deleting my comment over and over. ... I was like the third person she tagged and we were teammates. If she would have respected my reply - you know, because she's calling me out and making me look like I'm 'whatever' about it - I'm not cool with that. So that's why I got annoyed."
Calvillo (8-1) is scheduled to face Marina Rodriguez (12-0-1) at UFC D.C. on Dec. 7 and aims to extend her winning streak to three straight. The 32-year-old doesn't believe VanZant will drop back down to the strawweight division again, but Calvillo may no longer be interested regardless.
"I personally wouldn't care to have her under my resume because I don't think it would say anything," Calvillo said. "Because I really do think Paige VanZant sucks at fighting. I think that she's running scared and picking up the fights that she wants to fight for her last fight in the UFC as a flyweight."
UFC D.C. takes place Dec. 7 at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Watch the full interview with Calvillo below and subscribe to theScoreMMA YouTube channel here.
