White: McGregor-Masvidal a 'possibility' for Fight Island
It appears there's renewed interest in a bout between former UFC two-division champion Conor McGregor and Jorge Masvidal.
After revealing last week there was something else in the works for Masvidal besides a welterweight title fight against champion Kamaru Usman, UFC president Dana White said Monday that "Gamebred" could meet McGregor at a future event on Fight Island.
"That's a possibility, too," White said of McGregor-Masvidal during an appearance on the "Menace and The Man Show."
Masvidal and McGregor expressed interest in fighting each other after each of their most recent victories, but the welterweight bout did not come to fruition. White said earlier this year that he wanted McGregor to focus on the lightweight division, where he held the title from 2016-18.
Since then, the plan has been for Masvidal to fight Usman for the 170-pound title this summer. However, the coronavirus pandemic seemingly put a halt on finalizing the fight. And while it appears the UFC could be moving away from Usman-Masvidal for now, White didn't shoot it down entirely.
"The Usman fight is the fight that makes sense," he said. "It's the fight that needs to happen if Masvidal wants a title shot."
White did not give a timeframe for the potential McGregor-Masvidal clash. However, he said recently that Fight Island, a private island that will host events with international fighters unable to travel to the U.S. amid the COVID-19 crisis, will be operational by June.
