Poirier edges out Hooker in instant classic at UFC Fight Night

Dustin Poirier defeated Dan Hooker via unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 48-46) in the UFC Fight Night main event Saturday in Las Vegas.

The two lightweight contenders threw down for five rounds in what will surely be a candidate for "Fight of the Year." Hooker started strong, piecing up his opponent with shots from a distance. Poirier made the early rounds competitive, though, especially during a second frame that was one of the best in recent memory; Hooker nearly stopped Poirier at the end of the round.

The former interim champion took over in the last three rounds, but it remained a war with Hooker firing back. Poirier appeared to have a little more gas in the tank during the final few minutes and was able to land with more volume and power. "The Diamond" also mixed in his jiu-jitsu skills, getting Hooker to the mat a few times and controlling him. Poirier attempted a couple of submissions, including a late armbar, but Hooker's defense held up.

With the victory, Poirier successfully bounced back from a September loss to lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. The 31-year-old is now 6-1 (1 NC) in his past eight bouts.

Hooker saw his three-fight winning streak come to an end. The New Zealander entered the bout following a "Fight of the Year" candidate against Paul Felder, as well as victories over Al Iaquinta and James Vick.
