Covington slams Masvidal after 'most boring fight of all time' vs. Usman

The UFC 251 bout between welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal did not impress Colby Covington.

Usman dominated Masvidal with takedowns and clinch work, winning a unanimous decision. Covington said Thursday that he wasn't surprised last weekend's lackluster main event went the distance.

"I tried to watch it, but I fell asleep," Covington told theScore. "It was such a boring fight. It was the most boring fight of all time. Usman's out there taking 'Street Judas Masvidal' against the cage and hugging him for five rounds straight - not even throwing strikes or engaging. ... I found out how bad 'Marty Fakenewsman' is, and we found out how exposed 'Journeyman Masvidal' is."

Masvidal stepped up for the bout on a week's notice after Gilbert Burns tested positive for the coronavirus. "Gamebred" said after the event that with a full camp, a rematch would go his way. Covington isn't so sure.

"He didn't win one second of that fight," Covington said. "He got shut out on the scorecards, and he wants a rematch? That fight goes the same way every single time. And all this bullshit narrative that 'Street Judas Masvidal' didn't have a training camp and he only had a week, we all know that got put to rest because Dustin Poirier came out and said, 'Hey, Jorge has been training for the last couple months, he was in my training camp.' ... There's no excuses from Jorge that he didn't have a training camp. He had a full training camp. He just sucks at fighting."

Covington, who's coming off a fifth-round TKO loss to Usman last December, used to train with Masvidal at American Top Team in Florida. They were good friends and even lived together for a while. But the two had a falling-out recently and are now considered rivals.

The former interim champion further questioned Masvidal's skills, calling his 2019 campaign "lightning in a bottle." Masvidal, who's been a professional since 2003, became one of the UFC's biggest stars last year after winning three straight fights.

"The guy's a jobber," Covington said. "I don't know why everybody thinks he's so good. He got some hype by beating other hype men. Who'd he beat? Ben Askren? Yeah, if I fought Ben Askren every week I'd look like the K-1 world champion. I'd be having a crazy, highlight-reel knockout. But no, I don't get to fight 40-year-old virgins like Ben Askren. I gotta fight the cream of the crop and the best fighters in the world.

"We found out that (Masvidal) is all hype," the contender continued. "He got exposed, and the world knows now that he's a fraud and he's just selling everybody wolf tickets."
