Benavidez wants to retire off a win after losing last UFC title shot
Joseph Benavidez knows he'll never get another UFC title shot, but he's not hanging up his gloves just yet.
Following his first-round submission loss to Deiveson Figueiredo in a vacant flyweight title fight in the UFC Fight Night main event Saturday, the longtime contender said he plans to get one more win before retiring from the sport.
"I knew last fight (against Figueiredo in February) was my last title attempt," Benavidez said at the postfight press conference, according to MMA Junkie's Nolan King and John Morgan. "It wasn't, because of circumstances, so this one certainly was."
Benavidez has challenged for the UFC flyweight title four times since 2012, falling short twice to both former champ Demetrious Johnson and Figueiredo. The 35-year-old faced the latter earlier this year and lost via second-round TKO. Figueiredo didn't win the title because he missed weight, though, prompting the rematch.
"I don't want to go out on that (the second loss to Figueiredo), so I just want to go out with another fight," Benavidez said. "After that, there's nothing else for me to do."
