Khabib teases St-Pierre fight could happen in early 2021
Khabib Nurmagomedov apparently wants to test himself against one of the greats.
The UFC lightweight champion suggested Wednesday in an Instagram comment that he's targeting April 2021 for a fight against former middleweight and welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre. Nurmagomedov is currently scheduled to face Justin Gaethje in a title-unification bout on Oct. 24.
Nurmagomedov has previously expressed interest in fighting St-Pierre. "GSP" retired in early 2019, and he's since used Nurmagomedov as an example of an opponent who could get him to return for one more fight.
Ali Abdelaziz, Nurmagomedov's manager, recently told UFC Arabia the Russian titleholder will likely fight twice more to improve his record to 30-0, then walk away from the sport, according to DAZN's Steven Muehlhausen.
UFC president Dana White said Monday that he'd be willing to book Nurmagomedov versus St-Pierre as the former's final fight.
"The guy's been great to the company, he's been great to the sport," White told ESPN's Brett Okamoto. "I like Khabib a lot. I would do anything Khabib wanted to do."
