Jones eyes heavyweight crown, White says Ngannou next for Miocic
Jon Jones wants a crack at the UFC heavyweight title, but he's apparently not on the promotion's radar as Stipe Miocic's next challenger.
The light heavyweight champion reacted in a series of tweets to Miocic's successful heavyweight title defense against Daniel Cormier at UFC 252 on Saturday.
"Heavyweight world championships, I will be seeing you real soon," Jones wrote.
"Avoid Stipe's right hand, I'm too fast, I'll be too strong when the time is right and have way too much energy," the pound-for-pound king added. "Soon and very soon I'll be considered the baddest man on this planet."
However, Francis Ngannou will "definitely" get the next shot at Miocic, UFC president Dana White said at the postfight press conference.
"You can't jump over Francis," White said. "Francis has been out there destroying everybody. If you look at how long ago it was that he got that title shot, he's worked his way back. It belongs to Francis Ngannou."
White admitted, though, that Jones potentially moving to heavyweight is "very interesting." But after a public spat between the two over a financial dispute earlier in 2020, the executive is still unsure whether "Bones" wants to return to the Octagon, as Jones said he had no interest in fighting again for a while.
"The guy either wants to fight or he doesn't," White said. "If he wants to fight, he'll let us know. And if he doesn't, he won't."
