Cejudo's coach 'would love to see him' return for Volkanovski bout
Henry Cejudo's striking coach hopes the former UFC two-division champion ends his retirement and returns to the Octagon for another fight.
"As of now, he's done. ... But I would love to see him back," Eddie Cha told theScore. "He's what we call the unicorn. He's something special. ... He can do it all, he learns on the fly. Olympic gold medalist. These kind of attributes, his mindset, everything about that guy, he's a true champion.
"I love watching him fight, I love training him, but everything is what he wants to do," Cha continued. "So I support his decision 100 percent."
Cejudo, who held titles in the bantamweight and flyweight divisions, retired from the sport in May after a second-round TKO win over former champ Dominick Cruz at UFC 249.
A month later, the 33-year-old said he would entertain a comeback if it was for a superfight against featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. Cejudo has since continued to egg on Volkanovski on social media. Volkanovski said in June that he'd considered the Cejudo fight before his rematch with Max Holloway was booked for July.
Cha, who coaches out of Fight Ready MMA in Scottsdale, Arizona, said he doesn't believe Cejudo would exit retirement for a fight against "any champion." It would have to be "something big," Cha said, and the Volkanovski bout appears to fit the bill.
"I think (Cejudo) would definitely (return to fight Volkanovski) if it came to making history," Cha said, adding that he's not sure whether any talks for that fight have taken place. "No one has ever won three world titles in different divisions, so that would be something exciting."
