Frankie Edgar is a winner in his bantamweight debut.

The former lightweight champion beat Pedro Munhoz via split decision (48-47, 46-49, 48-47) in the main event of UFC Fight Night on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

This was a gritty fight from start to finish. Munhoz landed the harder shots and tagged Edgar once or twice in the contest, but "The Answer" stayed busier from the outside. Edgar was successful in landing combinations against Munhoz, who seemed focused on landing a knockout blow.

Munhoz mixed up his striking more than Edgar, landing a handful of solid leg kicks that appeared to take a toll on the ex-titleholder. Edgar relied on his wrestling a couple of times in the fight, but he didn't accomplish much while on top of his opponent.

Every time it seemed like Munhoz, who tightened up his defense in the latter rounds, was starting to pull away, Edgar rallied to keep it competitive. Ultimately, Edgar's output seemed to be the deciding factor in a fight that could've gone either way.

Edgar is now 1-0 in the 135-pound division, and he snapped his two-fight skid with the win. Edgar - who's been a professional fighter since 2005 - used to compete at 145 and 155 pounds, but many believed he was best fit for the bantamweight division.

This was a good start to Edgar's run in a new weight class, as he took out the No. 5-ranked contender in Munhoz. The Brazilian has now lost two straight fights.
