Magny dominates Lawler, wins decision at UFC Fight Night
Neil Magny defeated former champion Robbie Lawler via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) in the welterweight co-main event of UFC Fight Night on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.
Magny moved into second place on the UFC welterweight all-time wins list at 17. He's only two victories behind former titleholder Georges St-Pierre, who sits at the top with 19.
Magny dominated Lawler from start to finish. Lawler initiated a takedown attempt in the early moments of the contest, but Magny immediately reversed it and took control. Magny had a noticeable size advantage over his opponent, which allowed him to sit on top of Lawler during the majority of the first round.
Lawler pressed Magny early in the second round and looked to land punches, but Magny played it smart and took the 38-year-old down again. From there, Magny attempted a rear-naked choke, but Lawler's defense held up.
Despite Lawler being one of the UFC's most prolific knockout artists, Magny was able to pick him apart from the outside when they were on their feet. Lawler struggled to cut off the cage and hit Magny. In the third round, Magny continued to grapple him before landing solid knees in the clinch, not allowing Lawler to land anything of note.
Magny has now won three fights in a row.
Lawler, who held the UFC belt from 2014-16, suffered his fourth straight loss and hasn't had his hand raised since 2017.
