Report: Montano released after missing weight at UFC Vegas 33
The UFC released Nicco Montano after she failed to make weight for a bantamweight fight against Wu Yanan on July 31, sources told Guilherme Cruz and Damon Martin of MMA Fighting.
The bout was called off after Montano came in seven pounds over the limit. She ends her UFC tenure with a 4-3 record.
Montano became the promotion's first-ever flyweight champion when she defeated Roxanne Modafferi in the "TUF 26" finale in 2017. She was later stripped of the 125-pound title after being hospitalized following a bad weight cut for a bout against Valentina Shevchenko.
UFC president Dana White recently questioned the 32-year-old's desire to continue her mixed martial arts career.
"I don't know off the top of my head but, like, over three or four of her fights have been canceled," White said, per MMA Fighting. "I think that no matter what weight class you put her at, she seems to have a hard time making weight. This might not be the sport for her."
Montano suffered a unanimous decision loss to Julianna Pena in July 2019 after moving up to bantamweight. She later withdrew from matches against Macy Chiasson, Julia Avila, and Karol Rosa.
