Masvidal predicts UFC will cut Covington after fight: 'You're such a liability'
Jorge Masvidal thinks Colby Covington's time with the UFC could be coming to an end.
Masvidal, who's set to face Covington in the UFC 272 main event on March 5, said Tuesday he expects the promotion will part ways with Covington after their fight.
"Not only am I going to break your face in a very violent way, but the UFC's going to see you're such a liability that they're going to kick you out, bro," Masvidal said in a video posted on Twitter.
"And then it's going to be back to Indian reservations where you can fight. Maybe you could co-main event or some shit like that, because I don't even think you can main event after I'm done with you in any show."
Masvidal's comments could be referring to the fact Covington, a former UFC interim welterweight champion, is one of the most disliked and controversial fighters in the promotion. In 2017, Covington called Brazil a "dump" after a win over Demian Maia in Sao Paulo - which marked the beginning of his apparent heel turn - and he's since made headlines for racist remarks and his support of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
The meeting between Covington and Masvidal, who are both former UFC title challengers, is a highly anticipated grudge match. They used to be teammates at American Top Team in South Florida - and even lived together - but had a public falling out in recent years. Covington has since left that gym to train at nearby MMA Masters.
Covington and Masvidal are both coming off losses in rematches with UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. Masvidal suffered a highlight-reel knockout defeat to the titleholder last April, and Covington fell short by unanimous decision in November.
Masvidal, who opened as a sizable underdog for the upcoming fight with Covington, is confident he'll return to his winning ways against his rival.
"March 5 is getting closer," Masvidal said. "So is this knee to your temple."
