Sy stuns MacDonald via decision to earn PFL playoff spot
Sadibou Sy stunned Rory MacDonald by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) on Friday to clinch a spot in the PFL playoff.
MacDonald, who entered the bout atop the welterweight division, still clinched a playoff spot with six points in the PFL's regular-season standings.
MacDonald attempted to land single- and double-leg takedowns throughout the bout but was unable to bring down his 6-foot-3, 170-pound opponent. Sy scored a takedown with under two minutes remaining in the third round to truly frustrate the Canadian fighter.
Sy recorded a split-decision victory over Nikolay Aleksakhin in May. He's attempting to return to the playoff field after losing by unanimous decision to Magomed Magomedkerimov last year.
The Swede punched his ticket to the PFL's 170-pound playoff field alongside MacDonald, Carlos Leal, and Magomed Umalatov.
Sy improved his record to 11 victories with his upset of MacDonald. He will face Leal in one playoff match, while MacDonald will take on Umalatov in the other.
