Makhachev roasts BMF title: This belt is 'for the bums'

UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev isn't a fan of the promotion bringing back the BMF title.

"If Dustin Poirier beats (Justin) Gaethje, and he's gonna fight next for the lightweight title, he's gonna come with BMF title? ... I don't want this shit," Makhachev said in an interview with UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier.

The BMF title was initially introduced in a matchup between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz. Masvidal took home the belt after scoring a third-round TKO victory in the UFC 244 main event.

He added: "Honestly, this belt's for the bums. First time who fought for this belt? ... Two people who never can be champion, you know?"

The promotion is putting the BMF title on the line in a main-event bout that'll feature lightweights Poirier and Gaethje in a rematch at UFC 291 at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City on July 29.

Meanwhile, UFC president Dana White hinted at the idea of wanting to see a rematch between Makhachev and former champion Charles Oliveira after the Brazilian secured a first-round finish against Beneil Dariush at UFC 289 last weekend.

Oliveira was stripped of the title in May 2022 after missing weight ahead of his fight against Gaethje. Following a first-round submission win over the American at UFC 274, the 33-year-old suffered a second-round submission loss at the hands of Makhachev in a fight for the then-vacant lightweight belt last October.

While it's unclear who the next challenger will be for the 155-pound division title, Makhachev isn't eager to fight for the BMF belt.

"Honestly, if somebody give me this belt tomorrow, I don't want this shit," he said.
