Report: Grasso-Shevchenko 2 set for Sept. 16 card
Former UFC women's flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko is getting an immediate rematch against new titleholder Alexa Grasso, according to MMA Junkie.
The rematch is set to be the main event on the Sept. 16 card in Las Vegas. It's unclear if the event will be a pay-per-view or UFC Fight Night event. The bout will mark Grasso's first title defense since defeating Shevchenko at UFC 285.
Grasso (16-3) authored one of the most stunning upsets in mixed combat sports when she submitted Shevchenko via rear-naked choke in the fourth round of their title fight in March. The victory captured the flyweight title and extended her win streak to five bouts. She also made history as the first Mexican-born woman to capture a UFC title.
Grasso is a perfect 5-0 since moving up to the 125-pound division. Her last loss came against former strawweight champion Carla Esparza in 2019.
Shevchenko (23-4) will have a shot at redemption after losing the title to Grasso. The defeat marked the 35-year-old's first loss since dropping her UFC 215 match against Amanda Nunes via split decision. All three judges had "Bullet" winning on their scorecards before Grasso finished the fight in the fourth round. Prior to her defeat, Shevchenko successfully defended her title on seven occasions during her first stint as flyweight champion.
