Colby Covington says he suffered a broken foot during his recent defeat to UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards.
Covington said Wednesday on the "PBD Podcast" that the injury occurred when he landed a kick on Edwards' elbow about a minute into the UFC 296 main event last weekend in Las Vegas.
"At the end of the first round, you're just like, 'Man, that hurts,'" Covington said. "Usually, I sit on the stool (between rounds), and I didn't want to sit down on the stool."
Edwards beat Covington via lopsided unanimous decision to retain the 170-pound title. The champion badly bruised Covington's lead leg with kicks throughout the five-round bout. Covington did not mention the injury in his postfight interview Saturday.
The three-time title challenger, who was less aggressive than usual against Edwards, said the foot injury made it "tough" to keep fighting.
"It limits your mobility," Covington said. "I couldn't really move after that. I was kind of stuck in place. I was just trying to make sure that I could get through the fight. I never quit."
Covington, 35, stepped into the Octagon for the first time since a March 2022 win over Jorge Masvidal. "Chaos" is 2-3 in his last five outings and the last four years.
