Cormier: McGregor-Diaz 3 is biggest main event for UFC 300

Daniel Cormier thinks the UFC should turn to Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz to get the most bang for its buck from UFC 300.

The UFC Hall of Famer and color commentator said Tuesday there's no bigger option for the main event of the landmark card than a third fight between McGregor and Diaz.

"If McGregor fights Diaz, that is what I believe draws the general fan in as much as anything that they could do in the UFC right now," Cormier said on his "DC & RC" podcast. "Just because of Nate Diaz and the intrigue, the way the first fight played out, the way the second fight played out. It is still two of the highest-grossing pay-per-views in UFC history.

"These two men, when you put them together, make a lot of money. And it is far enough out there to be considered an attraction."

McGregor and Diaz fought twice in 2016, creating one of the biggest and most lucrative rivalries in UFC history. Diaz shocked McGregor with a second-round submission in their first encounter before McGregor got revenge via majority decision in the rematch.

The two superstars have contemplated booking a trilogy bout in the years since, but it's never come together. Diaz parted ways with the UFC as a free agent in 2022 to pursue a boxing match against Jake Paul, but the California native has expressed interest in returning to the Octagon at some point in the future.

The UFC hasn't yet announced a main event for UFC 300, scheduled for April 13 in Las Vegas. But the event already has a loaded undercard featuring strawweight champion Zhang Weili versus Yan Xiaonan and Justin Gaethje versus Max Holloway for the BMF title.

As far as McGregor goes, his next bout is expected to come against Michael Chandler. McGregor announced in December that he'd be fighting Chandler on June 29, but both recently showed interest in headlining UFC 300 instead.

Still, Cormier sees nothing being bigger than McGregor-Diaz 3.

"What I will say about UFC 300, it's missing a big fight," Cormier said. "That big fight that it's missing has to have a backstory. That big fight has to have bad blood. That big fight has to bring the eyeballs."
