Dan Hooker pulled off the upset against Mateusz Gamrot on Saturday, defeating him via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28) in a thrilling lightweight bout at UFC 305 in Perth, Australia.

A perennial contender at 155 pounds, Hooker will likely rejoin the top five following the victory. Gamrot was ranked No. 5 and Hooker No. 11 going in.

Hooker and Gamrot slugged it out on the feet for three rounds, with little separating the two lightweights. Gamrot also converted five of 15 takedown attempts and racked up a little under five minutes of control time.

The best moment for Hooker came late in the first when he rocked Gamrot with a left hook. Gamrot had dropped Hooker earlier in the stanza with a right hand.

In a competitive Round 2, Hooker appeared to land the more impactful shots, and in a close Round 3, Hooker pressed the action but Gamrot got the better of the exchanges. Hooker edged Gamrot 65-64 in significant strikes throughout the bout.

Hooker, who stepped into the Octagon for the first time in 13 months, is now riding a three-fight winning streak. Hooker fights out of Auckland, New Zealand.

Gamrot had won three straight going in. The Polish fighter suffered his first defeat since October 2022.
