Lawler prevails via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night
The UFC's welterweight division has its No. 1 contender.
Robbie Lawler assumed the role of top challenger to Johny Hendricks on Saturday night, earning a unanimous decision over Matt Brown in an entertaining main-event bout at UFC Fight Night: Lawler vs. Brown at the SAP Center in San Jose.
Lawler used his deft combination of precision and power to fend off a game Brown, who did his best to come back after dropping three of the first four rounds. Brown threw a variety of punches, kicks and elbows at Lawler in the final round, culminating in a furious exchange that saw Brown end the battle by sticking his tongue out at Lawler.
Judges scored the bout 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47 in favor of Lawler, who will face Hendricks when the champion returns from biceps surgery sometime this winter. The two previously faced off at UFC 171 in March, where Hendricks escaped with a unanimous decision in a brutal slugfest.
