Nick Diaz arrested for DUI
UFC welterweight Nick Diaz was arrested last weekend in Stockton, Calif., on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, ESPN's Brett Okamoto reports.
Per ESPN, the news was confirmed by Sergeant Steve Maynard of the Lodi Police Department, who said Diaz was taken into custody on Sept. 6 at 2:20 a.m. He was reportedly alone in his vehicle.
Diaz was asked to provide either a blood or breath alcohol test, according to Maynard. After requesting a breath test, Diaz asked to go to the bathroom.
"The officer took him to the restroom," Maynard is quoted as saying. "At that point, he tried to induce himself to vomit to get the alcohol out of his system. He was told repeatedly by the officer to stop. It took several times before he actually did stop. I don't know if he actually did or did not vomit."
A preliminary screening indicated Diaz's blood-alcohol content was above the legal limit. In addition to the DUI charge, he faces potential charges of attempting to destroy evidence and driving with a suspended license. No wreck or injuries were reported in association with the incident.
UFC released a statement in response to the police report:
"We are aware of the situation and are in the process of gathering the facts. We understand that there is a legal process that will now take place and that Nick Diaz will have the opportunity to address the situation in the near future."
Diaz (26-9) is scheduled to end a near two-year hiatus with a fight against former middleweight champion Anderson Silva in the main event of UFC 183 on Jan. 31.
