Gastelum: 'I believe that Rory MacDonald should get' next title shot
Rory MacDonald isn't the only one who thinks he deserves the next crack at Robbie Lawler's welterweight title.
Fellow 170-pounder Kelvin Gastelum, who UFC president Dana White said could earn a title shot with a win over Tyron Woodley at UFC 183 on Saturday, isn't convinced he's the guy who should fight for welterweight glory. At least not yet.
"Honestly, I believe that Rory MacDonald should get it," Gastelum told MMAFighting.com's Marc Raimondi. "That's my own personal opinion. He deserves it. He's (on) a three-fight winning streak, beat some of the best guys in the division and I believe he deserves it."
Gastelum has been on an impressive run of his own, claiming victories over Uriah Hall, Rick Story and Jake Ellenberger during a five-fight winning streak since joining the UFC following a stint on The Ultimate Fighter.
Should the 23-year-old California native sneak past Woodley, he'll definitely find himself in the upper echelon of the welterweight division.
"I embrace it," Gastelum said. "I welcome it. I feel good. This is a huge opportunity for me. Any opportunity like this doesn't come very often. So when they offered me this fight, I jumped on it. Any fight that's gonna lead me toward that goal, I'm gonna take it."
