Schaub talks about past painkiller addiction
Brendan Schaub has tangled with some terrifying heavyweights in his UFC career, but his battle with painkillers was likely the most difficult fight of his life.
Following a 2011 victory over Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, Schaub became addicted to painkillers after taking OxyContin to relieve the pain from a broken nose.
"They put these brackets up there, stitched them in, so when it moved I had to chill like that for six weeks. It was the most pain I've ever been in," Schaub told Joe Rogan on the "Fight Companion" podcast, according to BloodyElbow.com. "Popping painkillers everyday. Got addicted to them."
Schaub admitted he was still popping six OxyContins a day after the brackets were removed, and it took an intervention from a friend to get him to quit taking the drug.
"I was probably doing it hardcore for like four months," Schaub said. "Then my best friend Joe Klopfenstein came over and took them from me. They just knew I was taking it non-stop."
