UFC 185: 3 things you need to know
Two titles will be on the line when the Octagon returns to Dallas for UFC 185 on Saturday night. Lightweight champion Anthony Pettis takes on Rafael dos Anjos and women's strawweight overlord Carla Esparza faces Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
Here are three things you need to know:
Pettis's march to greatness
Unlike the other divisions in the UFC, there hasn't been a dominant, world-beating champion at 155 pounds.
Even the great B.J. Penn only defended the strap three times. In fact, every recent champion has had trouble holding onto the gold, with Benson Henderson and Frankie Edgar each defending the title three times before dropping it to the next man in line.
Anthony Pettis is hoping to break that streak.
The current lightweight conqueror has only defended his title once since capturing it in 2013, but has the kind of Matrix-esque, game-changing offensive ability to carry the mantle for years to come. He crumbled the impossibly durable Donald Cerrone with a body kick, submitted the Gumby-like Benson Henderson via armbar and finished the damn near unfinishable Gilbert Melendez.
He's doing things that human beings really shouldn't be able to do.
So, despite Rafael dos Anjos' power, and slick grappling, Pettis quite simply has too many weapons, and could be the breakout star the lightweight division needs. Also, he can do things like this:
Strawweight showcase
UFC 185 marks the first strawweight title defense in the promotion's history when champion Carla Esparza goes toe-to-toe with terrifying striker Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
Esparza earned the strap by winning the 20th season of "Ultimate Fighter," while the undefeated Jedrzejczyk upset Claudia Gadelha at UFC on FOX 13 to buy her way into the high-stakes poker game.
While both women have fought hard to earn their spot in the co-main event, Jedrzejczyk is hoping to eliminate the difficulty of pronouncing (and spelling) her name by going by the simple moniker: Joanna Champion.
"Soon, they're gonna call me Joanna Champion," Jedrzejczyk told MMAFighting.com's Marc Raimondi.
Maybe they will, Joanna. Maybe they will.
Brown vs. Hendricks in 'The Bout to Knock the Other Guy Out'
Matt Brown versus Johny Hendricks is the reason why MMA exists. The combination of Hendricks' nuclear warhead-laced left hand and Brown's seemingly impossible ruggedness should lead to some spectacularly beautiful ultraviolence.
Hendricks, the former UFC welterweight champion, will likely earn a rubber match with current kingpin Robbie Lawler should he emerge victorious against Brown, while Brown will vault himself into the title picture with a win over the impressively bearded Hendricks.
"This could be a fight for the fans. I'm trying to steal the show from (Anthony) Pettis," Hendricks told FOX Sports' Damon Martin. "He's a very talented fighter, he's a very good fighter but my goal - and I'm sure Matt Brown's goal - is to try and steal the show from the two main events."
