Kimbo Slice defeats Ken Shamrock with crushing 1st-round knockout at Bellator 138
With a stunning right hand punch, Kevin 'Kimbo Slice' Ferguson defeated Ken Shamrock after trailing for most of the first round in their main event bout at Bellator 138.
Slice was trapped on the ground for a good portion of the first round, held in a choke hold by Shamrock. However, Slice escaped his grasp, and the two fighters moved towards the edge of the cage.
Both appeared to reach a detente before engaging in a series of punches that would bring the fight to a halt. After both fighters traded blows, Slice wound up and delivered a crushing shot, knocking Shamrock off his feet and ending the fight in one fell swoop.
It remains unclear whether the 41-year-old Slice or the 51-year-old Shamrock will return to the ring after Friday's bout. In his first MMA fight in over five years, Slice improved his career record to 5-2, while Shamrock is now 28-16-2 all-time with losses in 11 of his last 14 fights.
Saved by the bell
In the night's most dramatic event, Patricio Freire snatched victory from the jaws of defeat by the slimmest margin possible.
Daniel Weichel appeared to defeat Freire with a flurry of punches towards the end of the first round. There was some ambiguity as to whether the referee stepped in due to Freire's inability to continue, or whether the bell rung to signify the end of the round, the latter quickly proving to be true.
When the second round begun, Weichel continued his dominance over Freire, forcing his opponent against the ropes. However, Freire countered with a thunderous left jab that dropped Weichel to the ground, winning the bout 32 seconds into the round by technical knockout in a result that silenced the Scottrade Center.
