Miocic: Werdum's 'got to keep that title for a while' before he's the greatest heavyweight of all time
If we're playing by the Ric Flair rules of "to be the man, you've got to beat the man," then Fabricio Werdum became "the man" after UFC 188 when he violently seized the heavyweight title from long-time champ Cain Velasquez.
Despite his status as the greatest heavyweight on the planet (and victories over Velasquez and the legendary Fedor Emelianenko), Werdum still isn't ready to assume the mantle of best heavyweight of all-time. At least that's the opinion of contender Stipe Miocic, who feels Vai Cavalo needs a longer title reign before he's considered the greatest of all time.
"Who knows? You've got to keep that title for a while," Miocic told MMAjunkie.com. "This is the first time he's the UFC champ. He's got to keep it."
Miocic, however, isn't taking anything away from Werdum's sterling, career-defining performance against Velasquez.
"Amazing," he said. "That's why he was the champ. He did what he had to do, and he got the belt."
Miocic, along with Velasquez, Junior dos Santos, and a newly reinvigorated Andrei Arlovski, is among those rumored to be Werdum's first title challenger.
